Normally, I’d be sharing my Eastercon schedule about now. Alas, due to circumstances beyond my control, I won’t be at Eastercon this year, which is a great shame, as I know lots of my favourite people will be. Have fun, and raise a glass to me! I will however shamelessly remind you that a couple […]
One thing many fledgling writers are in denial about is getting honest feedback. If you’re a writer, don’t feel bad about this: it took me years to pluck up courage to show my writing to anyone at all, and even more years before I dared show it to a stranger who might say something negative […]
I should read my outside my comfort zone more often: this book proves it. Winterwood by Jacey Bedford is an easy, compelling read which ticks loads of boxes – pirates, fae, adventure, angst, ghosts, wild magic – whilst managing to surprise you with unexpected plot developments and delight you with its beautifully paced story and […]
If I had to categorise Occupy Me it would be as speculative fiction about a secret and unseen war. Or about secret and unseen dimensions; also, time-travel and non-linear causality. Or perhaps as an exploration of selflessness through conflict. Or maybe a mystery thriller where the mystery stretches human comprehension. Actually, I’d rather not try and […]
… why not come on down to the NN Gallery in Northampton for 7pm, where I’ll be appearing with Ian Whates, Stephanie Saulter and Donna Scott to discuss the future of humans in space? We’ll be doing readings too, as part of the gallery’s current show’ They Shall Have Stars’. And it’s all free! There’s more […]
I’m really looking forward to being one of the Guests of Honour at Bristolcon on Saturday 26th. My fellow Guests will be artist Chris Moore, and Jasper Fforde (note to self: do not fan-girl Jaspar Fforde), and there will be many other writers, artists and generally interesting people there too. Here’s what I’m up to: 10am […]
If you like your space opera fast and violent, this book is for you. The story centres on two brothers, Connor and Logan: Connor is the (relatively) responsible one, and worries for his feckless brother – especially when Logan rekindles a old relationship with a dangerous woman. Both of them are neck-deep in gang politics […]
I’ve a fondness for alternate history. My first professionally published story, ‘A Path to the Sun’ (which you can read for free here), is alt. history, so when the editor of the fabulously titled ‘Mammoth Book of Tales from the Vatican Vaults‘ asked me to contribute a story, I was delighted. The conceit is that […]
I have to admit an interest here: I’ve known Al Robertson for some time, both as a writer and as a friend. But whilst I’ve always known he was a good writer – a damn good writer even – I have to confess that not everything of his I’ve read (and in some cases critiqued) […]
I have a great affection for my 2012 anthology Downside Girls. It contains early stories, since refined but still favourites of mine, as well as having the best cover evah; plus the marvellous Alastair Reynolds was kind enough to write a foreword for it. Downside Girls originally came out from Clarion, who were a pleasure to work […]
… buy your copy of The Ships of Aleph at only 99p/$1.47. Ideally from Smashwords, as they don’t rip authors off. It’ll be going up in price at the end of the month. And now I go into Smashwords I am reminded that, Hey! I did an interview there, which you can read here.
