Troublesome priests

This week, I have mainly been designing a theocracy.

Actually that’s not entirely true, as I’ve now started to critique stories and novel excerpts for Milford, the annual British SF writers’ workshop week coming up soon. But I’ve also been world-building for ‘Consorts of Heaven’. My evil gaming past means I’ve done a fair bit of this kind of thing, albeit with a different end result, but this was my first theocracy, and I enlisted Beloved’s help, buying him dinner in the local pub and asking for his ideas and opinions on what I had so far. As well as getting some funny looks, during the meal I found myself, not for the first time, delighted and slightly appalled at the devious mind of the man I have chosen to share my life with.

With his help, I think I’ve got my priests sussed. And I have enjoyed the process of sorting them out, even if it has meant a bit of re-writing of what I had done so far (I’m about a third of the way through the first draft). Ah the megalomania of the creative process. Their fate in my hands. I think a lot of my pleasure comes from the knowledge that these devout yet corrupt clergymen are going to end up having their religion yanked out from under them.
