I learnt the craft by writing short stories. Some years ago I put out a small collection, Downside Girls, which was a set of linked shorts set in the Hidden Empire universe. But I always wanted to see a more comprehensive collection of my short stuff.
Happily, the marvellous Ian Whates of Newcon Press obliged back in 2023, and put out Strange Attractors, a collection covering 20 years of my published writing in various genres. The collection was shortlisted for a BSFA award in 2024. But Strange Attractors was just the start of Newcon’s Polestars series, which has since seen the release of collections by some great writers (who also happen to be women) whose company I’m very happy to be in.
And now Newcon have put out a reasonably priced sampler with stories by the Polstars authors called Shining Brightly (also available on Am*zon). Full disclosure: my story in Shining Brightly is currently available for free on the web (on this very website in fact), however this sampler isn’t about me – because if you’re reading this, you probably know who I am – it’s a chance to read the work of SFF authors you might know about, to see if you might want to read more.
