Most of the way through the final re-read of Consorts of Heaven after the final changes, and I’m mildly concerned. As with the proofreading of Principles, I’m finding more wrong than I should, and I know there’s no safety-net: this version of Consorts has been copy-edited, and though it should be professionally proofread before going to print, the bound proof, which is what goes to reviewers, will be exactly what I send back later this week.
Most of my mistakes are the small ones I usually make such as adding or omitting words, generally as a result of editing on a computer (not so much of a problem back before word-processors, but then, typewriters don’t have that oh-so-useful ‘Find’ command). There’s also the odd piece of careless spell-checking. Yesterday I found a particularly odd example. The sentence which now reads: ‘The red scratch had developed a head of pus’ originally had an extra ‘s’ on the end. I’m rather glad I caught that one, though I’m worried what other amusing possibilities I might have missed.
