Happy New Thingie

I normally hate the beginning of the year but I’m currently feeling more optimistic than expected. Today I’ve blatted out another 2,000 words of the novel I started in National Novel Writing Month and done some of the short story admin I’ve been putting off. Some of those old stories are due to be retired from the submission game, a process I hate because it feels like giving up, but with a dozen ‘live’ stories out in various slush piles, the admin is getting out of hand, so it’s time to try and weed out the non-runners.

I think my uncharacteristic jollity might be due partly to coming back to work fresh after letting myself take a full two weeks off from writing (aside from the inevitable process of jotting down ideas in notebooks, which happens any time I am conscious and occasionally when I’m not). My first (admittedly slightly blurred) memory of 2007 is a good one too. At five minutes past midnight I was running up the main street in the village (the one I live in, not The Village), dressed in a cocktail dress, with a sparkler in one hand and a glass of champagne in the other, shrieking ‘Happy New Year’ at the top of my voice. Amazingly I wasn’t arrested. I suspect it was the cocktail dress that did it. You can get away with a lot round here if you’re well dressed.
